Comparing scope, not just totals

The bottom line is the easiest number to compare and the least useful on its own. One sewer quote may include a final camera run, the permit and concrete restoration; another may leave all three out. One repipe quote may include drywall patching to a paint-ready finish; another may stop at rough patches. Until the scopes match, the totals do not mean much.

Ask each contractor to put the details in writing, then fill in the table below. Where a line is blank, ask that contractor directly.

Before you compare

  • Every quote is in writing
  • Each contractor saw the same problem, ideally the same camera footage or test results
  • You know what is excluded from each quote
  • Each license has been checked and is active
  • Permit responsibility is clear on every quote

Reading the differences

  • IfOne quote is far lower than the othersThenCheck what is missing: permits, restoration, testing or cleanup.
  • IfContractors recommend different methodsThenAsk each one why, using the camera footage or test results.
  • IfA quote has no material detailsThenAsk for the pipe type, size and brand before deciding.
  • IfWarranty terms are vagueThenAsk for them in writing, including what is and is not covered.

Follow-up questions

  1. What could change the price once work starts?
  2. Who is my point of contact during the job?
  3. Will you be the one doing the work, or a crew or subcontractor?

Common questions

How many quotes should I get?

For planned jobs, two or three is a common approach. In an emergency, stop the damage first and compare quotes for any larger follow-up work.

Is the lowest quote a bad sign?

Not necessarily, but check whether the scope matches the others.

Can I ask a contractor to match another's scope?

Yes. Asking everyone to quote the same scope is the fairest comparison.
