About this example

This case is hypothetical. The family, house and details are invented; no real person, home or company is described. It exists to show the correct sequence, because with gas the order of actions matters more than anything else.

The house is a 1960s single-story home in Brea with its original gas piping and a range that was replaced years ago using an old flexible connector carried over from the previous stove.

What the family did right

  1. Noticed and stopped.Coming home from work, one of the adults smells a rotten-egg odor in the kitchen.
  2. Did not touch anything. No lights, no stove knobs, no garage door opener, no phone calls inside.
  3. Got everyone out. They took the kids and the dog out the front door and walked well away from the house.
  4. Called from outside. From a safe distance they called 911, and SoCalGas responded to the home.
  5. Waited.Nobody went back inside until they were told it was safe.

After the utility visit

Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.

In this example, the gas to the range is shut off and the appliance is tagged as unsafe. The source is a leaking old connector behind the stove.

  1. The owners hire a licensed plumber after checking the license at cslb.ca.gov.
  2. The plumber replaces the connector and the shutoff valve behind the range.
  3. The plumber pressure tests the house gas piping to confirm no other leaks.
  4. Service to the appliance is restored and the range is relit and checked.

The family also adds carbon monoxide alarms and has the other appliance connectors checked.

Lessons for any North OC home

  • Know the smell of natural gas and teach it to everyone in the house
  • Never reuse an old flexible connector on a new appliance
  • Install carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas
  • Have only licensed contractors work on gas piping
  • Ask whether a permit is needed for gas work; check with the city

Terms from this example

Common questions

Is this a real Brea incident?

No. It is an invented example.

Should they have shut the gas off at the meter?

Their priority was getting everyone out and calling from outside. Responders decide what to shut off.

Can any handyman replace a gas connector?

Gas work should be done by a licensed contractor. Check the license at cslb.ca.gov.
