Two tools, different jobs
A drain snake, or cable machine, spins a steel cable with a cutting head through the pipe. It punches a hole through a clog and can cut roots, which gets water moving again. What it leaves behind is whatever was coating the pipe walls: grease, soap scum, scale and root fibers.
A hydro jetter pushes water at high pressure through a hose with a nozzle that sprays backward and sideways. As it travels, it scours the pipe wall and flushes debris downstream. In kitchens with years of grease buildup, or cast-iron lines thick with scale, that difference can mean the clog stays gone longer.
Side by side
Cable snake
- Fast and widely available
- Good for paper, hair and simple clogs
- Cuts through roots to restore flow
- Leaves grease and scale on pipe walls
Hydro jetting
- Cleans the full diameter of the pipe
- Strong on grease, sludge and scale
- Often used before lining a sewer
- Not suitable for fragile, broken or collapsed pipe
Which fits your clog
| Problem | Usual first approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom sink full of hair | Remove the stopper and clean, or a small hand auger | The clog is within a foot or two of the drain |
| Tub or shower slow | Hand auger or small cable machine | Hair and soap near the trap |
| Kitchen sink keeps clogging | Cable to open it, jetting if grease returns | Grease coats the line for some distance |
| Main line backup with roots | Cable with root cutter, then camera | Restores flow and shows the cause |
| Restaurant kitchen line | Hydro jetting on a schedule | Heavy grease buildup returns quickly |
Habits that keep North OC drains open
- Scrape grease and food into the trash, not the sink
- Use strainers in tubs and showers
- Flush only toilet paper; wipes labeled flushable still cause clogs
- Run plenty of water with the disposal and avoid fibrous scraps
- Clean faucet aerators and shower heads, since hard water scale builds up
- Skip repeated chemical drain openers, which are hard on older pipes
What drives the cost
- Location
- A single fixture drain is different from the main lateral.
- Access
- A cleanout versus pulling a toilet or working through a roof vent.
- Method
- Jetting uses more specialized equipment than a cable machine.
- Add-ons
- Camera inspection and after-hours visits are often priced separately.
Questions to ask
- Why do you recommend jetting over a cable here, or the reverse?
- Will you camera the line before jetting it?
- What do you think caused this clog?
- Is there anything I can do to keep it from coming back?
Common questions
Is hydro jetting safe for my house?
It is commonly used on sound pipe. On cracked, collapsed or heavily corroded pipe it can make things worse, which is why a camera check first is sensible.
Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging?
Usually grease that hardens along the line. A cable opens a channel through it; jetting removes more of the buildup.
Should I try a plunger first?
For a single toilet or sink, yes. If several drains are slow or water comes up elsewhere, stop and call a plumber; that points to the main.
