What kind of gas problem is it?
- IfYou smell gas inside or near the meterThenLeave and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside. This is an emergency, not a plumbing appointment.
- IfSoCalGas has shut off your gas and red-tagged an appliance or lineThenA licensed contractor must repair the house piping or appliance connection before the utility restores service.
- IfYou want to add a gas line for a range, dryer, fire pit or tankless heaterThenPlan it with a licensed plumber; this usually needs a permit and a pressure test.
- IfA pilot keeps going out or a burner flame is yellowThenStop using the appliance and have it checked; this is not the same as a leak, but it is not something to ignore.
Who owns which part
SoCalGas provides gas service across North Orange County. Generally the utility handles the service line and meter, and everything on the house side of the meter is the property owner's piping. That house piping, along with appliance connectors and shutoff valves, is what a licensed plumber works on.
Many 1950s to 70s homes in the area still have their original black steel gas piping, sometimes supplemented over the years by flexible corrugated lines and appliance connectors of varying age. Older brass flex connectors behind ranges and dryers are a common replacement item. When a home adds a high-demand appliance such as a tankless water heater, the existing pipe size often becomes the limiting factor.
How gas line repair usually goes
- Gas off and area safe.Work starts with the gas shut off at the meter or at the affected branch.
- Locate the leak. The plumber uses a pressure test on the system and leak-detection solution or an electronic detector on fittings to find the source.
- Repair or replace.Leaking fittings are remade, failed connectors replaced, and corroded sections cut out and replaced with approved piping.
- Permit and inspection.New gas lines and many repairs need a permit and an inspection. Requirements vary, so check with your city's building department.
- Pressure test and relight. The system is pressure tested to confirm it holds, then appliances are relit and checked.

- Seismic gas shutoff valve

Common questions
Can a plumber work on my gas line?
Yes, a licensed plumbing contractor commonly repairs and installs house gas piping. Check the license at cslb.ca.gov and ask whether they will pull a permit.
Should I turn off the gas at the meter myself?
If you smell gas, your priority is getting out and calling 911 or SoCalGas from outside. Once gas is off at the meter, the utility typically has to restore service and relight.
Does adding a tankless water heater affect my gas line?
Often. Tankless units can demand more gas than the old tank, so the plumber should check the pipe size and run before quoting.
