Old and new side by side

Brea's downtown along Birch Street and Brea Boulevard has been heavily redeveloped, with newer retail, offices and housing. Step a few blocks into the surrounding neighborhoods and the housing gets older: midcentury single-story homes and some earlier houses from the city's oil-town and citrus past.

In those older homes the plumbing story is familiar: galvanized or copper supply lines, cast-iron or clay sewer laterals, and mature trees. The newer condos and townhomes nearby are a different case, often with shared building systems maintained by an HOA.
