The housing and what is under it
West Anaheim, roughly the part of the city west of the downtown core toward Buena Park and Stanton, filled in quickly with single-story tract homes during the 1950s and 60s building boom. Most of those houses sit on concrete slabs, and their original water lines were typically galvanized steel or copper, often running under the slab.
Many of the original sewer laterals from that era are clay or cast iron. Decades of mature street and yard trees mean roots at lateral joints are a familiar problem. Plenty of homes have been partly or fully repiped over the years, so two houses on the same street can have very different plumbing today.
