One drain or the whole house?

The pattern tells you a lot before anyone arrives.

  • IfOnly one sink or tub is slowThenIt is probably a branch clog close to that fixture.
  • IfToilets gurgle when the washer drains, or water rises in the tub when a toilet flushesThenThe main lateral is restricted downstream of all those fixtures.
  • IfThe lowest drain in the house overflowsThenThe main is blocked and sewage is backing up to the first opening it finds.
  • IfSeveral neighbors have the same problem at onceThenThe blockage may be in the city sewer main. Check with the city's sewer or public works department.

Why North OC laterals back up

The lateral is the pipe that carries everything from your house to the public sewer in the street. In homes built in the 1950s through the 70s it is often clay or cast iron. Clay has joints every few feet that roots love; cast iron corrodes and scales inside until the opening narrows. Add wipes, grease poured down the kitchen sink, or a sag where the soil settled, and the line eventually stops.

A cleanout makes the plumber's job much easier. It is a capped pipe, usually outside near the foundation or in the front yard, that gives direct access to the lateral. If you do not know where yours is, now is a good time to look. Some older homes have none, and adding one is a common upgrade.

What clearing and diagnosis usually involve

  1. Access the line.Through an outside cleanout if there is one, otherwise through a toilet flange or roof vent.
  2. Clear the blockage.A cable machine with a cutting head opens most root and paper clogs. Grease and heavy scale may call for hydro jetting.
  3. Camera the line.Running a camera after clearing shows whether the cause was roots, a break, a sag or simply what went down the drain.
  4. Talk through options. From maintenance cleaning to lining or replacing a damaged section, based on what the video shows.

Before the plumber arrives

  • Stop all water use in the house
  • Keep people and pets out of affected rooms
  • Locate the sewer cleanout and clear access to it
  • Photograph the overflow for your records and insurer
  • Note which fixtures backed up and in what order
  • Do not pour chemical drain openers into a backed-up main

What affects the cost

Access
An accessible outside cleanout is simpler than pulling a toilet.
Cause
A paper clog clears quickly; heavy roots or grease take longer.
Camera
Inspection is often priced separately from clearing; ask in advance.
Cleanup
Sanitizing and drying the house is separate from the plumbing work.

Questions to ask

  1. Can you run a camera after clearing so I can see the cause?
  2. Can I get a copy of the video?
  3. Is the problem in my lateral or in the city's sewer?
  4. Which part of the lateral am I responsible for in this city?

Common questions

Can I use chemical drain cleaner on a main line backup?

It rarely reaches a main blockage and leaves caustic water sitting in fixtures, which is a hazard for you and the plumber. Stop using water and have the line mechanically cleared.

Who pays if the blockage is in the street?

If the city sewer main is blocked, that is generally the city's issue. Who is responsible for the portion of lateral between your property line and the main varies by city, so check with the city.

Will it keep happening?

If roots or a damaged pipe caused it, likely yes until the pipe is repaired or relined. A camera inspection tells you which.
