Where the hardness comes from

Tap water in North Orange County is a blend of local groundwater and water imported from outside the region. Both carry dissolved calcium and magnesium, which is what makes water hard. Your water provider publishes an annual water quality report with hardness figures if you want specifics for your address.

When hard water is heated or evaporates, those minerals come out as scale. That is why the worst buildup shows up in water heaters, on shower heads and faucet aerators, and around fixtures that drip.

What scale does around the house

WhereWhat happensWhat helps
Tank water heaterSediment layer, rumbling, less hot water, shorter lifePeriodic flushing and anode checks
Tankless heaterScale in the heat exchanger, error codes, weak heatingRegular descaling through service valves
Faucet aerators and shower headsClogged screens and weak, uneven spraySoak in vinegar and rinse
Cartridges and valvesStiff handles, drips, valves that will not closeReplace cartridges; exercise shutoff valves
Toilet fill valvesSlow refill, valves that stick openClean or replace the fill valve
AppliancesDishwasher and washer wear, spotty dishesFollow manufacturer descaling guidance

A simple maintenance routine

  • Clean faucet aerators and shower heads a few times a year.
  • Flush a tank water heater following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Descale a tankless heater as the manufacturer recommends.
  • Gently turn angle stops and the main shutoff once a year so they do not seize.
  • Watch for white crust around valve stems and fittings; it can mark a slow leak.

Water softener or no softener

Softening is a choice, not a requirement. These are the trade-offs to discuss.

With a softener

  • Much less scale in heaters, valves and fixtures.
  • Fewer spots on dishes and glass.
  • Needs space, a drain and electrical service.
  • Requires salt or media and ongoing maintenance.

Without a softener

  • No equipment, salt or maintenance to manage.
  • Scale managed by cleaning and routine flushing.
  • Parts such as cartridges and fill valves wear sooner.
  • Water heaters need closer attention.

Questions to ask a plumber

  1. Is the scale in my water heater bad enough to affect its life?
  2. Would a softener or other treatment make sense for this house?
  3. Where would treatment equipment go, and does it need a drain or permit?

Common questions

Is hard water safe to drink?

Hardness minerals are not considered a health concern. Your water provider's annual water quality report lists what is in the water.

Do salt-free conditioners work?

They work differently from softeners and results vary. Ask for manufacturer data and how the product is meant to reduce scale.

Why is there white crust on my faucet?

That is mineral scale left as water evaporates. Vinegar dissolves it; heavy buildup around a valve stem can mean a slow drip.
