Do not do these when you smell gas

  • Turn lights or appliances on or off.
  • Light matches, lighters or candles.
  • Use a phone or doorbell inside the house.
  • Open the garage door with the electric opener.
  • Try to relight a pilot light.
  • Go back in until the gas company or fire department says it is safe.

Who is responsible for what

SoCalGas provides gas service and generally owns the meter and the line up to it. The piping downstream of the meter, through your yard, walls and attic to each appliance, is generally the property owner's responsibility. Repairs and new work on that house piping are done by licensed contractors.

After a leak is found and the gas is shut off, the utility may need to confirm the system is safe before service is restored. Ask the gas company what they require in your situation.

How proper gas line work is done

  1. Plan and permit

The contractor sizes the piping for all connected appliances and obtains any required permit. Check with the City of La Palma.

  2. Shut off and isolate

Gas is shut off at the meter or appliance valve before work starts.

  3. Install

Approved pipe and fittings are installed with appliance shutoffs and sediment traps where required.

  4. Pressure test

The new or repaired piping is tested to confirm it holds pressure without leaking.

  5. Inspect and relight

After inspection, gas is restored and appliances are relit and checked.

Questions to ask a contractor

  1. Is your CSLB license classification appropriate for gas piping work?
  2. Will you pull a permit and arrange the inspection?
  3. How will you test the system before it is put back in service?
  4. Should any old appliance connectors be replaced?

Common questions

What does a gas leak smell like?

Natural gas has an added odorant that smells like rotten eggs or sulfur. Treat any such smell indoors as a possible leak.

Can a handyman move a gas line?

Gas piping work should be done by a properly licensed contractor, usually with a permit and inspection. Check the license at cslb.ca.gov.

Should I have a gas detector?

Many homeowners install combination or natural gas detectors as an added precaution. They do not replace leaving immediately when you smell gas.
