From gurgle to backup

Month 1
The hall toilet gurgles when the washing machine drains.
Month 2
The shower drains slowly, and plunging only helps briefly.
Month 3, Saturday
Water rises in the shower when a toilet is flushed. The owner stops all water use and keeps the kids away from the bathroom.
Same day
A plumber clears the line through the outdoor cleanout with a cable machine; root fibers come back on the cutter.
Following week
A camera inspection is scheduled to see the condition of the lateral.

What the camera showed

  1. Pipe material

The lateral is vitrified clay from the original construction.

  2. Root entry points

Roots enter at several joints, heaviest near a large parkway tree.

  3. Offset joint

One joint has shifted slightly, leaving a lip that catches paper.

  4. No collapse

The pipe still holds its round shape along its length.

Options the owner was given

How the decision was made

Because the clay pipe still held its shape and the main problem was root entry at joints, the plumber explained that lining was a reasonable option. The offset was mild enough to line over. The owner also asked the City of La Palma about where the property owner's responsibility ends and whether a permit was needed for the work planned.

The owner chose to jet and line the lateral rather than commit to ongoing cleaning. A follow-up camera inspection after lining confirmed smooth flow through the former root areas.

Questions the owner asked

  1. Can I have a copy of the camera footage?
  2. Is the pipe sound enough for lining?
  3. Do I need to remove the tree?
  4. What is my responsibility versus the city's?

Common questions

Is this a real job?

No. It is a hypothetical example based on a common pattern in older neighborhoods.

Did the tree have to come out?

Not necessarily. Lining seals the joints roots use to enter. Ask an arborist and the city about any parkway tree.

Why camera after cleaning?

Cleaning restores flow, but the camera shows why the blockage formed and whether a repair is needed.
