One drain or many?

Where the clog shows up tells you where it probably is.

  • IfOnly one sink, tub or shower is slowThenThe clog is likely in that fixture's trap or branch line, close to the drain.
  • IfA toilet and the tub next to it both back upThenThe blockage may be in the shared branch for that bathroom.
  • IfSeveral fixtures across the house are slow or gurgleThenSuspect the main drain or the sewer lateral; avoid running water and call a plumber.
  • IfWater comes up in the tub when the toilet is flushedThenTreat it as a main line blockage and stop using water.
  • IfThe kitchen sink backs up into the other basinThenGrease and food in the kitchen branch line are the usual cause.

Common causes by fixture

FixtureUsual culpritsPrevention
Kitchen sinkGrease, coffee grounds, starchy food, disposal wasteWipe greasy pans before washing; keep grounds out
Bathroom sinkHair, soap scum, toothpaste buildupPop-up stoppers cleaned regularly
Tub and showerHair and soapA hair catcher over the drain
ToiletWipes, paper towels, too much paper, toysFlush only toilet paper
LaundryLint and fibersA lint trap on the discharge hose

What you can safely try first

  • Use a cup plunger for sinks and tubs, and a flange plunger for toilets. Cover the overflow on sinks and tubs while plunging.
  • Pull and clean the pop-up stopper on a bathroom sink.
  • Remove hair from a tub or shower drain with a plastic drain tool.
  • Clean a kitchen sink trap with a bucket underneath, if you are comfortable doing so.
  • Avoid chemical drain openers; they can damage older pipes and make the job dangerous for whoever opens the drain next.
  • Stop if water is rising or sewage is involved, and call a plumber.

Cable machine or hydro jetting

Cable machine (snaking)

  • A rotating cable with a cutting head breaks through the blockage.
  • Good for hair, paper and soft clogs in branch lines.
  • Can cut through roots to restore flow.
  • Opens a channel but may leave buildup on pipe walls.

Hydro jetting

  • High-pressure water scours the full inside of the pipe.
  • Effective on grease, scale and root fragments.
  • Often used before a camera inspection or pipe lining.
  • Pipe should be checked first; very fragile pipe may not suit it.

When a camera makes sense

If a drain clogs again soon after being cleared, or if several fixtures are involved, a camera inspection shows whether there is a physical problem such as a root intrusion, a cracked section or a sag. In older La Palma homes with cast-iron drains under the slab, scale buildup can narrow the pipe enough to cause repeat clogs even without roots.

Seeing the inside of the pipe turns a guess into a plan, and it helps you decide whether ongoing cleaning or a repair is the better use of money.

Questions to ask when you call

  1. Do you charge for the visit, and how is the cleaning priced?
  2. Which method will you use for this drain, and why?
  3. If the clog comes back, would you recommend a camera inspection?
  4. What is your CSLB license number?

Common questions

Are enzyme drain cleaners safe?

Enzyme and bacterial products are gentler than caustic chemicals and are sometimes used for maintenance. They are slow and will not clear a hard blockage.

Why does my kitchen sink keep clogging?

Grease cools and coats the inside of the pipe, catching food particles. Repeated clogs in the same line may call for jetting rather than repeated snaking.

Is a gurgling toilet a problem?

Gurgling when other fixtures drain can point to a partial blockage in the main line or a venting problem. It is worth having checked before it turns into a backup.
