The surprise

Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.

A La Palma household opens a water bill noticeably higher than usual. Nobody has added people, filled a pool or changed the irrigation schedule.

  1. They check the yard for wet spots and find none.
  2. Floors are cool and dry, and no cabinets are damp.
  3. They decide to run a staged meter test one evening.
  4. The meter moves slowly with everything off and stops when all toilet stops are closed.

With the toilets isolated as the cause, a dye test in each tank shows color creeping into two of the three bowls.

What they found

ToiletDye testCause
Hall bathColor in the bowl after 15 minutesWarped flapper
Primary bathColor in the bowl after 10 minutesFlapper hardened by scale; fill valve slightly high
Half bathNo colorNo leak

The fix

  1. Close the stops

Each leaking toilet's angle stop is closed and the tank is flushed empty.

  2. Replace flappers

Matching flappers for the flush valve size are installed.

  3. Adjust water level

The fill valve in the primary bath is set so water stops below the overflow tube.

  4. Retest

The dye test and the meter test are repeated; both pass.

Why silent leaks are easy to miss

A flapper that leaks slightly lets water trickle into the bowl continuously. There may be no sound at all, or only an occasional brief refill in the middle of the night. Hard water speeds up the problem by stiffening rubber parts and roughening the seat they seal against.

In this example the household handled the repair themselves. If a toilet's flush valve seat is damaged, or the fill valve does not respond to adjustment, a plumber can replace those parts.

What to take from this

  • A higher bill with no visible leak is worth a meter test.
  • Isolate toilets before suspecting hidden pipe leaks.
  • Dye-test toilets once or twice a year.

Common questions

Is this a real story?

No. It is an invented example of a common situation.

Can I use any flapper?

Flappers come in sizes and styles. Match the flush valve size and type, or bring the old one to the store.

What if the meter still moves after fixing the toilets?

Continue the staged test or call a plumber for leak detection.
