Why a written map helps
In a plumbing emergency people rarely forget that a main shutoff exists; they forget where it is, or discover it is buried under a shrub or seized solid. Mapping the valves on a calm afternoon, and turning each one gently, catches those problems before they matter.
In many La Mirada houses the main shutoff is on the supply pipe near the front hose bib, the meter is in a box at the curb, and the sewer cleanout is a capped pipe near where the drain leaves the house. Your house may differ, which is exactly why it is worth writing down.

How to test each valve safely
- Start with fixture stops.Close each one gently, then open the faucet or flush the toilet to confirm the water stops. Reopen fully.
- Watch for drips after.Old stops often leak at the stem after they are moved. Leave a paper towel under each one for an hour.
- Test the main last.Close it, open a faucet to confirm flow stops, then reopen slowly to avoid a pressure surge.
- Do not force a stuck valve.A handle that will not move, or a valve that drips badly when turned, should be replaced by a plumber.
Keep these with the map
- A meter key or adjustable wrench stored near the main.
- A flashlight that lives in the same place.
- The name of the water provider from your bill.
- A note of which breaker controls the water heater or disposal.
- A photo of each valve on your phone.
Common questions
How often should I test shutoff valves?
Once or twice a year is a reasonable habit. Valves that are never moved are the ones most likely to seize.
My main shutoff is an old gate valve. Should I replace it?
Gate valves can fail internally and may not close fully. Many owners have a plumber install a quarter-turn ball valve, often during other work.
Can I use the meter valve instead of the house shutoff?
In an emergency it may work, though it often needs a meter key. The street side belongs to the water provider, so use it with care.
