Patterns tell the story

A drain that backs up only after laundry, a gurgle that appears after several showers, or a meter that moves overnight but not at midday all point to different causes. On the day the plumber arrives, the problem may not be happening at all, so your notes are the only evidence.

Keep the log for two or three weeks if the problem is not urgent. Record even small events. In older La Mirada homes with clay laterals and aging supply lines, slow trends are often more revealing than a single dramatic failure.

Questions to ask the plumber about your log

  1. Does the pattern point to a branch line, the main line or the supply side?
  2. Which test would confirm it, such as a camera run or pressure test?
  3. Is there anything I should keep logging after the repair?

Common questions

Is a log worth it for an obvious problem?

For a burst pipe, no; stop the water and call. The log is for intermittent or slowly developing problems.

Should I record water bills too?

Yes. Comparing usage over several billing periods can confirm a hidden leak started at a certain time.

What if the plumber cannot reproduce the problem?

Your log, photos and videos give them a starting point, and may justify a camera inspection or pressure test.
