What to ask, and why
How do I check a plumber's license?
Get the CSLB number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The name should match the company in front of you, and the license should be active.
Who actually does the work?
Ask whether the person at your door works for the licensed contractor or is a subcontractor, and who answers for it if something goes wrong.
Should the price be in writing?
Yes. Anything past a simple service call deserves a written scope and price, including what happens if the job turns out bigger.
What if they find something else mid-job?
Ask them to stop and show you before doing extra work. Photos or camera video make the call easier and leave a record.
Is a sewer camera inspection worth it?
If backups keep returning, or you're buying an older house, yes. It replaces guessing with video. Keep a copy.
Will the job need a permit?
Water heaters, gas lines, repipes and sewer work often do. Ask who pulls it, and check with the city if you're unsure.
