Why the order matters
Most of the damage in a plumbing emergency happens in the minutes before anyone closes a valve. A split washer hose can put a surprising amount of water on a slab floor while someone is searching for a phone number. In a La Mirada tract house, where the water lines often run in or under the slab and the main shutoff sits outside near the front hose bib, knowing the route to that valve saves more than any fast arrival could.
The second reason is safety. Water near the electrical panel, sewage on the floor and gas around a water heater are each more dangerous than the plumbing failure that caused them. A calm sequence keeps people away from those hazards first and deals with the pipe second.
The first hour, step by step
- Check for gas and electricity.Any gas odor means everyone leaves and the call goes to 911 or SoCalGas from outside. If water is near outlets, cords or the panel, keep people out of the wet area.
- Stop the water at the closest valve.Use the fixture stop under the sink, behind the toilet or behind the washer. If there is none, or it will not close, go to the main shutoff at the front of the house.
- Drain the pressure. With the main closed, open a low outside faucet or a bathtub tap so the water left in the pipes runs somewhere harmless instead of out of the break.
- Stop using drains if sewage is involved.Every flush, shower and load of laundry adds to a backup. Tell the household, and keep children and pets away from any overflow.
- Protect what you can.Move rugs, electronics and boxes off wet floors. Put towels at doorways to keep water from spreading into other rooms.
- Document, then call.Take photos of the leak, the damage and any failed part. Then call a licensed plumber, and your insurer if the damage is significant.
Call now, or schedule for tomorrow?
A rough guide. When in doubt, close the water and ask the plumber on the phone.
- IfYou smell gasThenLeave and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside. This comes before any plumber.
- IfWater will not stop even with the main closedThenTreat it as an emergency; the leak may be on the street side, so also call your water provider.
- IfSewage is coming up into a tub, shower or floor drainThenStop all water use and call for same-day help.
- IfThe water heater is leaking from the tank bodyThenClose the cold inlet, set the burner to off or pilot, and schedule replacement soon.
- IfOne toilet is running or one sink is slowThenClose the fixture stop if needed and book a normal visit.
- IfThe meter shows a small leak you cannot findThenNot an emergency, but schedule leak detection before it turns into slab damage.
What to have ready when you call
| Detail | Why a plumber asks |
|---|---|
| What you saw and when it started | Separates a sudden break from a slow leak that has been building for weeks. |
| Which fixtures are affected | One fixture points to a local problem; several at once points to the main line or supply. |
| Whether the water or gas is off | Tells them how urgent the visit is and what is safe to do before they arrive. |
| Age of the house and any past repairs | A 1950s or 60s home suggests galvanized or early copper lines and a clay or cast-iron lateral. |
| Photos and the location of your cleanout | Lets them bring the right parts and equipment the first time. |
Questions to ask on an emergency call
- What is your California contractor license number, so I can check it at cslb.ca.gov?
- Is this visit a diagnostic, a temporary fix, or a full repair?
- How is the after-hours visit charged, and what does it include?
- Will you give me a written scope before any larger work starts?
- Is the person coming an employee or a subcontractor?
Common questions
Should I turn off the water heater when I shut off the main?
If the main will be off for a while, setting a gas water heater to pilot or an electric one off at the breaker is a reasonable precaution. Do not drain it unless a plumber tells you to.
Can I wait until morning for a burst pipe if the main is closed?
Often yes, as long as the water is fully stopped and nothing electrical is wet. The house will be without water, so many people still want a same-day temporary fix.
Is a sewage backup a health risk?
Yes. Keep people and pets away, avoid skin contact, and ventilate the area. Larger sewage cleanups are often best left to a restoration company after the plumbing is cleared.
