What happens
Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.
After moving a gas dryer to clean behind it, a homeowner in an older La Mirada house notices a rotten egg smell in the laundry area.
- They do not turn lights on or off and do not try to find the leak.
- They get everyone, including pets, out of the house and leave the front door open.
- From the sidewalk, well away from the house, they call SoCalGas.
- They wait outside until they are told it is safe to go back in.
The gas company finds a leak at the dryer connection, shuts off gas to that appliance and advises a repair by a qualified contractor before it is used again.
Why the connector failed in this example
In this invented case the dryer was connected with an old flexible connector that had been bent sharply each time the dryer was pulled out. Moving it one more time opened a small crack at the fitting.
Old flexible connectors, especially uncoated brass types found in some older homes, are a common weak point. Replacing them is a small job, but because it involves gas, it is one to leave to a licensed contractor.
What the repair might involve
- Confirm the shutoff. The contractor verifies the appliance shutoff valve is closed and in good condition, or replaces it.
- Replace the connector.A new connector of the correct length is installed without sharp bends.
- Leak test.Connections are checked with leak detection solution or an electronic detector.
- Restore and check.Gas is restored and the dryer is run to confirm proper operation.
Lessons for your own appliances
- Know where each gas appliance's shutoff valve is.
- Avoid kinking connectors when moving a dryer or range.
- Ask a plumber to check old connectors during other work.
- Install carbon monoxide alarms as required and test them.
Questions to ask a contractor after a gas incident
- Are there other old connectors in the house that should be replaced?
- Should the house piping be pressure-tested?
- Does this repair need a permit? Check with the city.
Common questions
Is this a real event?
No. It is a made-up example to illustrate safe steps after a gas odor.
Why leave the door open?
It helps gas disperse. Do not delay leaving to open windows.
Can I move the dryer back and use electric mode?
Do not use the appliance or restore gas until the leak has been repaired and checked.
