How drains are laid out in a typical tract house

Each fixture drains through a short branch line that joins a larger building drain under the slab. That drain leaves the house and becomes the sewer lateral, usually running under the front yard to the city sewer main in the street. In many La Mirada homes from the 1950s and 60s, the building drain is cast iron and the lateral is clay or cast iron.

Because sewage follows gravity, a blockage in the main line backs up into the lowest openings first. In a single-story slab house that is usually a shower or tub drain, or the toilet nearest the point where the line leaves the house. That pattern is the most useful clue you have.

Reading the symptoms

  • IfOnly one sink or tub is slowThenA branch clog, often hair, soap or grease near that fixture.
  • IfA toilet gurgles when the washer drainsThenThe main line is restricted; water is pushing air back up other fixtures.
  • IfWater comes up in the shower when a toilet is flushedThenMain line or lateral blockage. Stop using water and call for help.
  • IfSewage smell or wet ground in the front yardThenPossible break or blockage in the lateral; keep people and pets away from the area.
  • IfBackups return every few monthsThenSomething keeps catching debris, often roots, a sag or a broken joint. A camera inspection is the next step.

How a plumber typically clears and diagnoses the line

  1. Find the cleanout. Most homes have a cleanout outside near where the line leaves the house, often a capped pipe in a flower bed. Older homes may need access through a toilet.
  2. Restore flow.A cable machine with a cutting head opens most main line clogs enough to use the plumbing again.
  3. Look at the cause.A camera run through the cleanout shows whether the clog was roots, grease, a collapsed section or a belly holding water.
  4. Recommend the next step. That may be nothing, periodic maintenance, hydro jetting, a spot repair, lining or replacing the lateral.

What drives the cost of main line work

FactorWhy it matters
Cleanout accessNo usable cleanout means pulling a toilet or installing a cleanout first.
Cause of the blockageGrease clears differently from roots or broken pipe.
Length and depth of the lateralLonger, deeper runs take more time and equipment.
Pipe material and conditionFragile clay or cast iron limits which methods are safe to use.
Work in the public right of wayRepairs near or under the sidewalk or street may need city approval; check with the city.

Habits that reduce backups

  • Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing them.
  • Flush only toilet paper; so-called flushable wipes do not break down like paper.
  • Use hair catchers in showers and tubs.
  • Know where your outside cleanout is and keep it uncovered.
  • If backups recur, ask for camera video rather than repeated snaking.

Common questions

Who is responsible for the sewer lateral?

In many cities the property owner is responsible for the lateral from the house to the main, sometimes including the portion under the sidewalk. Check with the city for the rule at your address.

Can I use chemical drain cleaner on a main line clog?

It rarely reaches a main line clog and can make work more hazardous for the plumber. Stop using water and call instead.

Do I need a camera inspection after every clog?

Not after a one-time clog that clears easily. Repeated backups, or buying an older home, are good reasons to see the line on camera.
