What actually bursts in Southern California homes

In a mild climate the classic frozen pipe is not the usual culprit. Far more often the failure is a braided or rubber supply hose under a sink or behind the washer, a toilet supply line with a cracked plastic nut, a corroded galvanized nipple at the water heater, or a pinhole in old copper that finally opens up. High street pressure without a working regulator makes all of these more likely.

Because most of these parts sit at fixtures, the fixture stop valve is usually the quickest way to stop the water. When the break is in a wall, an attic line or the main itself, the whole house has to be shut off at the main valve near the front of the house.

Immediate response

  1. Close the nearest valve.Fixture stop first. If the break is in a wall or ceiling, or the stop will not turn, close the main shutoff.
  2. Kill power to wet areas if safe.If water is reaching outlets, lights or appliances, switch off those circuits at the panel only if you can stand somewhere dry.
  3. Relieve pressure.Open a low faucet or tub spout to drain the remaining water out of the pipes.
  4. Remove standing water.Mop, wet-vacuum and lift wet rugs. Open windows and run fans to start drying.
  5. Keep the failed part.Save the broken hose or fitting and photograph it in place. It helps explain the cause and supports an insurance claim.

Common failure points and typical fixes

Where it failedTypical repair
Washer fill hoseReplace both hoses with quality braided lines; check the wall valves.
Sink or toilet supply lineReplace the line and, if it is stiff or leaking, the angle stop behind it.
Water heater connectorReplace the flexible connectors and any corroded galvanized nipples.
Pinhole in copper inside a wallOpen the wall, cut out the damaged section and solder or press in new pipe.
Main line near the houseReplace the damaged section; consider a new main shutoff valve at the same time.

Repair the spot, or look at the whole system?

  • IfA rubber washer hose split after many yearsThenReplace it and the other hose; no wider work needed.
  • IfA copper line has had pinholes in more than one placeThenAsk about the condition of the rest of the copper and whether repiping makes sense.
  • IfGalvanized fittings keep failing at the water heater or hose bibsThenPlan for replacing galvanized pipe, which corrodes from the inside.
  • IfSeveral hoses and fittings failed at onceThenHave the street pressure checked; a failed pressure regulator may be the root cause.

After the repair

  • Turn the main back on slowly and check the repaired spot while the system pressurizes.
  • Bleed air from faucets one at a time, starting with the lowest.
  • Relight or restore power to the water heater if you shut it down.
  • Ask the plumber to note the house water pressure on the invoice.
  • Keep photos, the invoice and any drying records together.

Common questions

How often should washer hoses be replaced?

Rubber hoses age and harden. Many people replace them every few years or switch to braided stainless hoses, and close the valves when away for long periods.

Why do pipes burst if it does not freeze here?

Corrosion, worn hoses, high water pressure and water hammer cause most failures in Southern California homes.

Does a burst pipe repair need a permit?

A simple hose or fitting replacement usually does not. Larger pipe replacement may; check with the city or ask the plumber.
