Two tools, two different jobs
A drain snake, or cable machine, pushes a rotating steel cable through the pipe. The head bores through the blockage and, with a cutting blade, can chop through roots. It restores flow quickly and works in almost any line, but it leaves much of the grease, scale or root mass clinging to the pipe walls.
Hydro jetting sends water at very high pressure through a hose with a nozzle that sprays backward and sideways. The jets pull the hose forward and scrub the inside of the pipe, flushing grease, sludge, scale and fine roots downstream. It cleans more thoroughly, but the force that makes it effective is also why pipe condition matters before it is used.
Side by side
Cable snaking
- Opens a passage through the clog.
- Good for hair, paper and single blockages.
- Cutting heads can trim roots back.
- Gentler on fragile pipe.
- Buildup on the walls is left behind, so clogs can return.
Hydro jetting
- Scours the full inside diameter of the pipe.
- Good for grease, sludge, scale and fine roots.
- Often lengthens the time between clogs.
- Needs a pipe in reasonable condition.
- Usually paired with a camera inspection before and after.
Which method is likely to be suggested
- IfA kitchen line keeps clogging with greaseThenJetting usually clears it more completely than snaking.
- IfA bathroom sink is slow from hairThenA small hand snake or cable machine is enough.
- IfRoots return every few monthsThenCutting plus jetting can buy time, but the joints letting roots in still need a long-term fix.
- IfThe camera shows a broken or collapsed sectionThenNeither method fixes it; a repair or replacement is needed.
- IfThe line is badly scaled cast ironThenCareful descaling may help; ask whether lining is a better option.
What affects the cost of drain clearing
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Which line is clogged | A single fixture branch is simpler than the main line or lateral. |
| Access point | A good outside cleanout is faster than pulling a toilet or going through a roof vent. |
| Method | Jetting uses more specialized equipment than a cable machine. |
| Camera inspection | Adds time but shows the cause and the result. |
| Time of the call | After-hours work is often charged differently; ask up front. |
Questions to ask before drain clearing
- Which line do you think is clogged, and where will you access it?
- Will you run a camera before jetting my clay or cast-iron line?
- Can I see the camera video after cleaning?
- If the clog returns soon, what does that point to?
- What would you recommend as the long-term fix?
Common questions
Can hydro jetting damage pipes?
On sound pipe it is generally safe when done by an experienced operator. On cracked, offset or badly deteriorated pipe it can make damage worse, which is why a camera check comes first.
How often should a line be jetted?
There is no fixed schedule. Lines that collect grease or roots may benefit from periodic cleaning; a clean, sound line may not need it at all.
Is jetting a fix for roots?
It clears them for a while. Roots come back through the same joints, so lining or replacing the affected section is the lasting fix.
