Why a written log helps

Memory is unreliable about drains. By the time someone comes out, it is hard to recall whether the tub gurgled before or after the washer drained, or whether the kitchen was slow last month too. Those details are exactly what separates a fixture clog from a main sewer problem.

Print this page or copy the table into a notebook. Keep it near the laundry area or the water heater, and add a line every time something happens. Bring it out when you call a plumber, and keep it with any camera footage afterward.

The log

Add one row per event. Leave cells blank if you do not know.

Words to use in the What happened column

Slow
Water drains, but takes longer than usual.
Standing
Water sits in the fixture and does not go down on its own.
Gurgle
A bubbling or glugging sound from a drain, often when a different fixture is used.
Backflow
Water or waste comes up out of a drain that was not being used.
Odor
A sewer smell near a drain, toilet, cleanout or the yard.

Also note once, at the top of the log

  • Year the home was built, if you know it
  • Where the sewer cleanout is
  • Large trees near the path of the sewer line
  • Dates of past snaking, jetting or camera work
  • Any repairs to the sewer lateral and who did them
  • Whether any drain chemicals have been used

Reading your log

  • IfRows show one fixture only, again and againThenLikely a problem in that fixture's branch line.
  • IfRows show the lowest tub or shower affected when other fixtures runThenPoints toward the main sewer lateral.
  • IfEvents cluster after heavy water use, like laundry days or guestsThenA partial main-line restriction is likely.
  • IfEvents return a few months after each clearingThenRoots or wall buildup are worth checking with a camera.

Common questions

How long should I keep the log?

Keep it as long as you own the home. A record of repeat problems is useful for future repairs and for buyers.

Should I note what was flushed?

Yes, if you know. Wipes, grease or a child's toy change what the plumber looks for.

Is a phone note as good as paper?

Any format works as long as you record date, fixture and what happened consistently.
