What gurgling actually is

Drains need air as well as water. Vent pipes through the roof let air into the system so water can flow smoothly. When the vent is blocked, or water is squeezing past a partial clog downstream, air gets pulled through the nearest trap instead. That is the gurgle you hear in a tub when the toilet flushes.

Sewer smell usually means sewer gas is getting past a seal that should stop it: a trap without water, a loose cleanout cap, a failed toilet wax ring, or a crack in the drain. A partly blocked lateral can also push gas back toward the house.

Simple things to try first

  • Run water for a minute in rarely used sinks, showers and floor drains
  • Make sure the sewer cleanout cap is present and tight
  • Check that toilets are firmly seated and not rocking
  • Look for standing water or a slow drain anywhere else in the house
  • Note when the smell or gurgle happens and which fixture triggers it

When to call a plumber

  • IfThe smell goes away after refilling a trapThenKeep running water in that drain occasionally; no call needed.
  • IfGurgling comes with slow drains in more than one fixtureThenHave the main line checked before it backs up.
  • IfSmell persists with no dry trap or loose capThenAsk about camera or smoke testing to find a crack or vent issue.
  • IfWater rises in a tub or shower when other fixtures drainThenTreat it as a main-line problem and limit water use until it is cleared.

Common questions

Is sewer gas dangerous?

Strong or ongoing sewer gas exposure is unhealthy, and it signals that a seal or pipe is not doing its job. Ventilate and have the source found.

Can jetting fix gurgling?

If gurgling is caused by buildup restricting the main line, clearing it often stops the gurgle. If the vent is blocked, the vent needs attention.

Why does my drain smell only in hot weather?

Traps can evaporate faster in heat, and odors carry more. Refill rarely used traps and see whether the smell returns.
