Why the questions matter

Hydro jetting puts a lot of energy into a pipe you cannot see. Done well, it leaves a clean line and a clear record of its condition. Done carelessly on a fragile clay or cast-iron lateral, it can stir up a bigger problem. The questions below are not meant to trip anyone up; a competent plumber will answer them easily.

Use them on the phone when you first call, and again in person before the hose goes in.

License and who does the work

  1. What is your CSLB license number? (Then check it at cslb.ca.gov.)
  2. Will your own employees do the work, or a subcontractor?
  3. Who will actually be at my house, and are they trained on jetting equipment?

The inspection

  1. Will you run a camera before jetting? If not, why not?
  2. Will you camera again afterward to confirm the result?
  3. Do I get a copy of the footage with defect locations marked?
  4. What will you do if the camera shows a broken or collapsed pipe?

The jetting itself

  1. Which access point will you use?
  2. Which nozzle will you use, and why that one for my line?
  3. How will you adjust for the age and material of my pipe?
  4. Where does the debris go, and how do you keep it out of the house?

Price and paperwork

  1. Is the quote fixed, or does it depend on time or findings?
  2. What exactly is included: access, camera passes, jetting, cleanup?
  3. Will you stop and talk to me before doing anything outside the quote?
  4. Can I have all of this in writing before you start?

Common questions

What if a company refuses to camera the line?

For a simple branch clog that can be fine. For an older main lateral, ask why, and consider another contractor if the answer does not satisfy you.

Should I be home during the work?

It helps. You can point out access points, see the camera footage and approve any change in scope.

How do I check a license?

Go to cslb.ca.gov and search the license number. Check that it is active and that the name matches the business you are hiring.
