Where the scale comes from

Common questions

Will a water softener prevent scale in my drains?

A softener reduces minerals in water used in the house, which can reduce scale over time. It will not remove buildup that is already there or stop cast-iron corrosion.

Can vinegar or descaling products clear drain scale?

They may help with fixture deposits. They are unlikely to clear scale deep in a drain line.

Does PVC or ABS pipe scale too?

Plastic does not rust, so buildup is usually lighter, but soap and minerals can still coat it over time.
