Work through it in order

  1. How many problem spots?.Count the defects on the footage and note whether they are clustered or spread along the line.
  2. Is the pipe still round and continuous?.Cracks and roots in an otherwise intact pipe keep more options open than collapsed or missing sections.
  3. Is the slope right?.A belly that holds water changes the answer, because some methods follow the existing slope.
  4. What is above it?.Lawn, concrete, a driveway, the house slab or a large tree all affect which approach is practical.
  5. Is there access at both ends?.Cleanouts and room for small pits matter for trenchless methods.

From findings to methods

  • IfOne defect, rest of the line soundThenAsk about a spot repair, either by digging to it or sectional lining.
  • IfRoots or cracks at many joints, pipe still roundThenAsk about lining the full run, and compare with replacement.
  • IfPipe broken or partly collapsed, slope acceptableThenAsk about pipe bursting or open-trench replacement.
  • IfLong belly holding waterThenAsk about excavating and re-laying that section at the correct slope.
  • IfFailing cast iron under the slabThenAsk about lining from inside, tunneling or cutting the floor.
  • IfLine needs a new routeThenOpen-trench work is usually needed for the rerouted section.

Questions to bring to the contractor

  1. Which branch of this guide does my footage fall into, in your view?
  2. What would make you change your recommended method once work starts?
  3. Does the method you recommend fix every defect you found?
  4. Would any of these methods need a City of Fullerton permit?

Common questions

Can two methods be combined?

Yes. Some jobs line most of the run and dig to fix one belly or a collapsed section.

What if contractors disagree on the method?

Ask each to show the footage that supports their choice. Disagreement often comes from different assumptions about the pipe's condition.

Is trenchless always preferable?

It usually means less digging, but it does not suit every pipe. A belly, collapse or reroute may still need excavation.
