What to ask, and why
How do I check a contractor's license?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov to confirm the name, status and classification match the company you are talking to.
Someone says my whole line must be replaced. How can I be sure?
Ask to watch the camera footage and see where each defect is. If only one section is damaged, ask about a spot repair. A second opinion based on the same footage is reasonable for a large job.
Will they tear up my yard or driveway?
Ask exactly where they will dig, how big the openings will be, and who restores landscaping, concrete or pavers afterward. Get those answers in writing.
What should the written estimate include?
The method, the length of pipe being repaired or replaced, the pipe material, access points, permits and inspections, cleanup and restoration, and what happens if they find more damage once they open the line.
Who will actually do the work?
Ask whether the licensed company's own employees or subcontractors will be on site, and confirm any subcontractor is licensed as well.
Is it safe to keep using the house during a backup?
Limit water use until the line is cleared, and keep people and pets away from sewage. If sewage has soaked carpet, drywall or furniture, ask about proper cleanup before moving back into those rooms.
