Why two quotes can look so different

Two contractors can look at the same Fullerton sewer line and quote very different jobs. One may plan to repair a single section while another plans to replace the whole run. One may include restoring the driveway and the other may stop at backfilling the trench. Before comparing numbers, compare scope.

The cost of sewer work is driven mostly by how much pipe is being fixed, how hard it is to reach, the method chosen and what has to be rebuilt afterward. Knowing those factors lets you ask why a quote is what it is.

The main cost drivers

FactorWhy it matters
Length of pipeMore pipe repaired, lined or replaced generally means more material and labor.
DepthDeeper lines take more excavation and may need shoring.
MethodSpot repair, open trench, lining and bursting each use different equipment and time.
AccessWhether there is a usable cleanout and room for pits or equipment.
What is above the pipeConcrete, pavers, a slab, trees or landscaping all affect the work and restoration.
Pipe conditionHeavy roots, scale or collapse can add cleaning and prep work.
ConnectionsHow the new pipe joins the house drain and the connection at the street.
Permits and inspectionsSome work requires them; check with the City of Fullerton.
RestorationWhether the estimate includes rebuilding surfaces or only backfill.

Make sure every estimate states

Comparing two estimates fairly

Look for differences in

  • How much of the line each plans to fix
  • Method and materials
  • What restoration is included
  • Who handles permits
  • How extra work is priced

Then ask each contractor

  • Why they chose that scope and method
  • What they saw on the footage that supports it
  • What they left out and why
  • Whether their CSLB license is active at cslb.ca.gov
  • Who will actually do the work

Questions to ask about a quote

  1. What would change this price once the work starts?
  2. Is restoration of concrete, pavers or landscaping included?
  3. Would a different method cost more or less here, and why did you choose this one?
  4. Is the price for my whole line, or only the section on the footage?

Common questions

Why does this site not list prices?

Prices depend on the line, the method and the restoration, and change over time. Any number here would be a guess. Compare written estimates from licensed contractors instead.

Is the cheapest estimate the best one?

Not necessarily. A lower number may cover less pipe or leave out restoration or permits. Compare scope first, then price.

Does insurance help with the cost?

Some policies cover backup damage or offer service-line coverage, while others exclude the pipe itself. Ask your insurer before work begins.
