What a routine can and cannot do

An older clay or cast-iron lateral already has joints, rough spots or roots that catch debris. Keeping grease, wipes and food scraps out of the line gives those weak spots less to grab, which can stretch the time between clogs.

A routine will not seal a joint, lift a sagging section or remove roots for good. Its real value is giving you a regular moment to notice change, such as a drain getting slower, a new smell or a soggy patch of lawn, while the problem is still small.

The calendar

Every week
Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing; put the towel in the trash, not the drain.
Every month
Run each rarely used drain, such as a guest shower, for a minute so traps stay full and odors stay out.
January
Find and check the outdoor cleanout cap; clear soil or plants from around it.
April
Walk the likely path of the lateral and note wet spots, sinking or extra-green grass.
July
Review your symptom log; note whether clogs are becoming more frequent.
October
Before holiday cooking, remind the household about grease and food scraps; check strainers in sinks and tubs.
After any clearing
Record the date and method, and ask for camera footage if the line keeps clogging.

Questions to ask at your next plumber visit

  1. Based on the footage, is a regular clearing schedule worth it for my line?
  2. Is there anything in my habits that is making clogs worse?
  3. Which part of the line should I watch most closely?

Common questions

Do enzyme drain treatments help?

Some people use them for minor buildup, but they do not remove roots or fix damaged pipe. Ask a plumber whether anything is suitable for your line.

Should I schedule regular jetting?

For a line with known roots or buildup, some homeowners do. The camera footage and your clog history are the best guide to whether it is worthwhile.

Is hot water enough to flush grease?

No. Grease cools and hardens further down the line. Keep it out of drains entirely.
