Hillside lots change the picture

On a flat tract lot, the lateral usually runs a short, straight path to the street. On a hillside lot, the house may sit well above or below the street, set back behind terraces, steps or retaining walls, and the sewer line may run further and deeper than you expect.

Many homes in Raymond Hills are decades old, so original laterals are often clay or cast iron unless they have been replaced. Add mature trees planted on slopes, and root intrusion and shifting joints are familiar concerns.

Hillside-specific things to note

How slope can affect repair choices

  • IfThe line runs under terraces or wallsThenTrenchless methods may avoid disturbing them; ask whether the pipe is a candidate.
  • IfSoil movement has shifted the pipeThenExpect offsets or breaks; lining may not suit badly shifted sections.
  • IfThe line is deep near the streetThenAsk how depth affects digging, pits and safety.
  • IfPart of the system relies on a pumpThenAsk how the pump, alarm and discharge line are inspected along with the gravity line.

Common questions

Do hillside homes have more sewer problems?

Not necessarily, but longer runs, soil movement and trees on slopes can add to the usual risks of older pipe.

Is trenchless work possible on a slope?

Often, depending on pipe condition and access. Slope and walls are good reasons to ask about it.

What if my house is below the street?

Ask a plumber how your home connects to the main; some properties use a pump for part of the system.
