Compare what is included before what it costs

One estimate may cover twelve feet of pipe and another the whole lateral. One may include rebuilding a walkway and another may stop at backfill. Until those differences are lined up side by side, the totals do not tell you much.

Fill in each row from the written estimates. Where an estimate is silent on something, write 'not stated' and ask the contractor about it before deciding.

Red flags to note on the worksheet

When estimates differ a lot

  • IfOne plans a spot repair and another a full replacementThenAsk each to explain, using the footage, why their scope is right.
  • IfMethods differ, such as lining versus trenchingThenAsk what each method would leave unfixed, such as a belly.
  • IfRestoration is included in one and not the otherThenGet a written restoration scope from both before comparing totals.
  • IfOne estimate is much lower with the same scopeThenCheck what is excluded, and confirm the license and who does the work.

Common questions

Can I ask a contractor to rewrite their estimate in this format?

You can ask any contractor to clarify scope in writing. Most will add detail if you point to what is missing.

What if one contractor will not inspect first?

Note that on the worksheet. A quote without inspection rests on assumptions you should ask about.

Should the lowest total win?

Only if the scope, materials, permits and restoration match. Otherwise the lowest number may simply cover less.
