What a belly is

A sewer lateral depends on gravity. It is laid with a steady downward slope so water carries waste toward the main. A belly forms when part of the pipe settles lower than the sections around it. Water pools in that dip, solids drop out of the flow and build up, and the line slowly narrows until it clogs.

Bellies can come from soil settling over time, poor bedding when the pipe was first laid, past excavation nearby, or the weight of something built over the line. On camera, a belly looks like the camera lens dipping into standing water, sometimes fully submerged, before climbing out again on the far side.

Signs a belly may be the cause

How repair options handle a belly

ApproachEffect on the bellyWhen it is considered
Routine cleaning or jettingClears buildup; the low spot remainsShort-term relief or a minor dip
Pipe liningSeals the pipe but follows the sagWhen cracks matter more than the dip
Pipe burstingNew pipe generally follows the old pathWhen the pipe is broken but the slope is acceptable
Excavate and re-lay the sectionRestores the correct slopeWhen the belly is long or deep enough to cause repeat clogs
Full replacement by trenchRe-grades the whole runWhen the belly is one of several problems

Example: the clog that kept coming back

Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.

In an illustrative Fullerton tract home, the main line is cleared three times in a year. Each time, the clog is around the same distance out from the house cleanout.

  1. After the third clearing, the homeowner asks for a camera inspection.
  2. The footage shows the camera dipping underwater for a stretch, then rising again.
  3. The plumber locates the low section above ground and estimates its depth.
  4. Two options are written up: periodic cleaning, or excavating and re-laying that section at the correct slope.

Seeing the standing water on video helps the homeowner understand why cleaning alone had not worked, and compare both options on paper.

Questions to ask about a belly

  1. How long is the low section, and how much water stays in it?
  2. Is the pipe in the belly also cracked or separated?
  3. What would re-laying that section involve, and what is above it?
  4. If I keep cleaning instead, how often would you expect it to clog?

Common questions

Can hydro jetting fix a belly?

Jetting can flush out the buildup in a belly, but it cannot raise the pipe. The low spot will refill with debris over time.

Is every bit of standing water a belly?

A little water can sit in parts of a line normally. A belly is a section where the camera dips noticeably and water stays well after flow stops.

Why did my pipe sag in the first place?

Common reasons include soil settlement, poor bedding when it was installed, nearby digging or loads above the pipe. The repair aims to support the new pipe properly.
