Comparing like with like
Repipe quotes are notoriously hard to compare. One lists PEX with patching included; another lists copper, excludes the main line and says nothing about the permit. The totals look far apart, but they are not quotes for the same job.
Use this sheet to line them up. Where a quote is silent on a line, write Not stated and ask the contractor to clarify in writing. Only once every column is filled can the totals be compared honestly.

Before you fill it in
- Give every contractor the same pipe worksheet and leak log.
- Ask each to quote the same material, or to price both.
- Ask for the quote in writing, not by text or phone only.
- Ask how hidden conditions and change orders are priced.
Spotting gaps
- IfA column has many Not stated linesAsk for a revised written quote before comparing totals.
- IfOne quote is much lowerLook for excluded lines: patching, permit, main line, some fixtures.
- IfA quote asks for a large payment before work beginsCheck California down payment rules at cslb.ca.gov before signing.
- IfThe license does not match the business nameDo not sign until that is explained and verified.
Follow-up questions per quote
- Is this a fixed price for this scope?
- What is excluded?
- Who will be on site each day?
- When could work start, and how many days will water be affected?
Common questions
Can I share one quote with another contractor?
You can share the scope you want priced. Many owners remove prices first and ask each to quote the same written scope.
What if contractors recommend different materials?
Ask each to explain why, then decide the material and ask for comparable prices.
How long are quotes good for?
Ask each contractor; the answer should be on the written quote.
