Use it on every contractor

This checklist turns the advice in the hiring guide into something you can print and mark up during a visit or a phone call. Use the same sheet for every contractor so nobody gets a pass on a step because they seemed friendly or were the first to show up.

Nothing on this list requires special knowledge. It only requires asking, writing the answer down and checking the license yourself at cslb.ca.gov.

License and identity

  • I have the contractor's CSLB license number in writing.
  • I looked it up at cslb.ca.gov and it is active.
  • The name on the license matches the name on the quote and contract.
  • The license classification covers plumbing.
  • I know whether employees or subcontractors will do the work.

Scope and paperwork

  • The quote names the pipe material and fitting system.
  • Every fixture and appliance is listed.
  • New fixture shutoff valves are stated.
  • The main line is either included or clearly excluded.
  • The permit holder is named.
  • The drywall finish level is written down.
  • Payment is tied to progress, not mostly upfront.
  • Any warranty is written, not verbal.

Common questions

Is a business license the same as a CSLB license?

No. A city business license is separate. For plumbing contracting work, check the state contractor license at cslb.ca.gov.

Do I need to check subcontractors too?

Ask who they are and whether they hold their own license. It is reasonable to check.

What if the contractor is in a hurry?

Unless water is actively leaking, a repipe can wait the time it takes to tick these boxes.
