Maintenance for old pipes and new

If your home is still on its original pipe, routine checks help you spot the warning signs early and keep a log for the repipe decision. If you have just repiped, the same checks protect the new system: fixture valves stay free, aerators stay clear, and a slow drip at a new joint gets noticed in days rather than months.

Fullerton's hard water makes some tasks more frequent than in soft-water areas. Mineral scale builds in aerators, showerheads, cartridges and water heater tanks. Adjust the schedule below to what you actually see in your house.

Cleaning an aerator

  1. Unscrew.Turn the tip of the faucet counterclockwise. Wrap it in a cloth if pliers are needed.
  2. Rinse.Flush out grit and scale. Soak in vinegar if heavily crusted.
  3. Reassemble.Replace parts in the same order and screw back on hand-tight.

Signs to log during checks

  • White or green crust at joints.
  • A valve that will not turn or drips at the stem.
  • Rust-colored water on the first draw.
  • A meter that moves with everything off.
  • Loose or missing water heater straps.

Ask a plumber at your next visit

  1. Is my water pressure in a reasonable range?
  2. Is my water heater due for attention?
  3. Would water treatment help with scale in this house?

Common questions

Does a new repipe need maintenance?

The pipe itself needs little, but valves, aerators and the water heater still benefit from regular checks.

Are water heater straps really required?

Yes. California requires water heaters to be strapped for earthquakes. Ask a plumber if yours look loose or inadequate.

Can I skip flushing the water heater?

Sediment builds faster with hard water. Follow the manual's recommendation.
