Three common sources
Brown or orange water is alarming, but the source is usually one of three things. Inside the house, galvanized steel pipe rusts from the inside and sheds particles, especially after water has sat still overnight. A water heater tank can rust too, which tends to show up on the hot side only. Outside the house, work on city water mains or a change in flow can stir up sediment that arrives at every home on the street.
Telling them apart matters because the fixes are completely different. A repipe does nothing for a rusting heater, and a new heater will not help if the house is plumbed in galvanized pipe. Spend a few minutes testing before you spend money.
Simple tests to narrow it down
- Hot or cold?.Run cold only at a tub spout or outside hose bib, then hot only. Note which is discolored.
- First draw or constant?.Note whether color clears after a minute of running or stays.
- One tap or all?.Check several fixtures. A single tap points to its branch or fixture.
- Ask the neighbors. If nearby homes see the same thing at the same time, the cause may be in the city system.
- Check for city work.Look for crews on the street or notices from Fullerton's water utility.
What the results suggest
| What you see | Likely source | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Hot side only | Water heater tank or connections | Have the heater checked and flushed |
| Both sides, worst in the morning, clears after running | Galvanized supply pipe | Confirm pipe material; ask about a repipe |
| Sudden at all taps and at neighbors too | City mains disturbance | Contact the city's water utility |
| One fixture only | That branch or fixture | Have that line and valve inspected |
Protect your fixtures meanwhile
- Avoid running laundry while water is discolored, to prevent staining.
- Clean faucet aerators, which catch rust particles.
- Run cold water until clear before drinking or cooking.
- Note dates and times of discoloration for the plumber.
Ask the plumber
- Is there galvanized pipe anywhere in my supply system?
- Is the water heater tank showing signs of rust?
- Could a galvanized nipple at the heater explain the hot-side color?
- Would a partial repipe stop the discoloration, or only a whole-house one?
Common questions
Can a water softener or filter fix rusty water?
Filters can catch particles, but they do not stop galvanized pipe from corroding. Treat the source if the pipe is the cause.
Why is it worse in the morning?
Water sitting in corroded pipe overnight picks up more rust. Running it flushes that water out.
Is yellow water different from brown?
Both usually point to iron or sediment. The tests on this page apply to both.
