Step 2: how your household uses hot water

Step 3: which direction to explore

  • Ifthe current heater has worked wellstart with quotes for the same type and size in the same spot.
  • Ifyou run out of hot water oftenask about a larger tank or a tankless unit, and a gas supply check.
  • Ifyou want the garage floor space backask what a wall-mounted tankless conversion would require.
  • Ifyou want minimal upkeep in hard waterweigh a tank, or tankless with water treatment and scheduled flushing.

Step 4: compare quotes side by side

QuestionQuote AQuote BQuote C
Heater model and capacity or flow rating____________

Venting changes included?____________
Strapping, expansion control, drain pan____________
Permit and inspection included?____________
Haul-away of old unit____________

Making the comparison fair

Quotes for water heaters often look different because they include different things. One may include a new gas shutoff, expansion tank and permit; another may leave those out or treat them as extras. Filling in the table forces each quote into the same shape, so you can see whether you are comparing the same job.

If one quote recommends far more work than the others, ask that contractor to explain why in writing. Sometimes they have spotted something real, like an undersized gas line; sometimes the others are the better fit.

Common questions

How many quotes should I get?

For a planned replacement, two or three written quotes are common. For an emergency leak, stop the water first.

Should I replace a working heater?

That is your decision. Age, repair history and household needs all factor in; ask a plumber for an honest assessment.

What if the heater is leaking now?

Turn it off at its power or gas control, close the cold inlet valve and keep water away from electrical. Then plan the replacement.
