One fixture or the whole house?
- Ifonly one faucet or shower is weakstart at that fixture: aerator, shower head, stop valve, cartridge.
- Ifonly hot water is weak everywherelook at the water heater: valves, scale, or a tankless inlet filter.
- Ifeverything is weak, hot and coldcheck the main shutoff is fully open and have the pressure regulator tested.
- Ifflow dropped right after plumbing workdebris may have lodged in aerators or cartridges; clean them first.
Why scale targets the ends of the line
Aerators and shower heads have fine screens and small openings. As Fullerton's hard water evaporates from them between uses, minerals are left behind, and each layer narrows the passages a bit more. Water-saving fixtures with very small orifices show it sooner.
The pattern is easy to spot: a spray that splits into odd angles, a stream that sputters, or a white crust around the outlet. Because it builds slowly, many homeowners assume pressure has dropped when the plumbing behind the wall is fine.
Cleaning an aerator or shower head
Remove it
Unscrew the aerator by hand or with a wrapped wrench. Many shower heads unscrew from the arm.
Note the order
Lay the screens and washers out in order so they go back the same way.
Soak
Soak the parts in white vinegar until the scale softens.
Brush and rinse
Use a soft brush and clear the holes; rinse well.
Reinstall and test
Reassemble with the washer in place and run the water.
If cleaning did not help
When a plumber gets involved
- Cartridge
- Removing and replacing a faucet or shower cartridge needs the right part.
- Stop valves
- Stops that will not open fully may need replacing.
- Supply lines
- Damaged lines are inexpensive parts but must be fitted correctly.
- Hidden restriction
- A restriction inside a wall line needs diagnosis, not guessing.
Questions to ask
- Is the restriction at the fixture, the valve or the supply line?
- Is my house pressure normal?
- Would a different aerator or shower head handle hard water better?
- Is water treatment worth considering for this house?
Common questions
Can I remove the flow restrictor from my shower head?
Flow limits on fixtures relate to water-efficiency rules. Rather than removing it, clean the head or choose a fixture designed for better spray at the same flow.
Will vinegar damage the finish?
Most finishes tolerate a short soak, but check the maker's care instructions, especially for specialty finishes.
Why is only the hot side weak?
That points toward the water heater, its valves or a hot-side cartridge issue rather than the aerator.
