Water leak or burst line

  1. Stop the water

Close the fixture stop, the manifold valve for that line, or the main shutoff.

  2. Drain pressure

Open a faucet on the lowest level so the line empties.

  3. Protect electrical

Keep clear of wet outlets and fixtures. Turn off a circuit only from a dry spot.

  4. Contain and dry

Towels, buckets, move belongings. Start air moving.

  5. Document

Photos and video of the source and the damage before cleanup.

Sewage backup

  1. Stop using water

No flushing, showers, dishwasher or laundry anywhere in the house.

  2. Keep people away

Keep children and pets out of the area. Sewage carries germs.

  3. Protect yourself

Avoid touching it. If you must, wear gloves and wash thoroughly afterward.

  4. Call for help

Call a licensed plumber about the drain line. Professional cleanup may be needed.

Common questions

Should I turn off the gas at the meter myself?

Only if you smell gas or suspect a leak and can do it safely from outside. Your safety comes first: leave and call. SoCalGas restores service after a shutoff.

Is a dripping pipe an emergency?

A slow drip you can contain is urgent but not usually an emergency. Spreading water, water near electrical or a burst line is.

Who pays for a leak at the meter?

Leaks on the utility side of the meter are generally the city's to handle. Check with the City of Fullerton water utility.
