What the housing tells you

Much of West Anaheim was built out as single-family tracts in the 1950s and 1960s. Like similar neighborhoods across North Orange County, those homes are typically slab-on-grade, originally plumbed with galvanized or copper supply lines, with cast-iron or clay laterals running to the street sewer.

Decades later, many have had water heaters replaced several times and some lines updated, but the underlying layout is often original. Mature street trees and yard trees are common, and their roots are a frequent reason older laterals back up.

If drains back up in a West Anaheim home

  1. Stop water use

No flushing, showers or laundry until it is cleared.

  2. Keep people away from sewage

Keep children and pets out of the area.

  3. Find the cleanout

Note where the sewer cleanout is; a plumber will need it.

  4. Ask for a camera inspection

After clearing, footage shows whether roots, a crack or a sag caused the backup.
