Reading your own log

After two or three flushes, the scale column tells a story. If every flush finds heavy scale, the interval is too long for your water, or treatment may be worth considering. If scale is consistently light, you have room to stay on the manufacturer's standard schedule.

Codes matter in the same way. A single flame code during a cold morning when the furnace was running is different from the same code every week. Patterns point toward gas supply, venting or scale, and the person servicing the unit can use them.

Common questions

Where should I keep the log?

A plastic sleeve taped near the heater works well, with a photo copy on your phone.

Does the manufacturer need this?

Some manufacturers ask for proof of maintenance. Keep receipts along with the log.

What if I bought the house without records?

Start the log now and have the unit inspected and flushed so you have a baseline.
