Why a written map helps
In a leak, the person who notices it first is not always the person who knows the house. A written shutoff map turns a frantic search into a thirty-second walk. It is also handy for house sitters, older relatives and anyone who rents the home later.
Walk the house with a flashlight and this page. Note each valve's location in plain words, what kind of handle it has, and whether it actually turned when you tested it.

How to fill it in
- Start at the street.Find the meter box and note whether a key is needed. Do not force utility equipment.
- Find the main.Follow the supply line to where it enters the house, often near a front hose bib or in the garage.
- Work room by room.Open each sink cabinet, look behind each toilet and check the laundry area.
- Test gently.Turn each water valve closed and open again. Mark any that are stiff, drip or do not stop flow.
- Label and share.Tag the main valve and show everyone in the household how it turns.
Keep near the map
- A flashlight that works.
- Towels and a bucket for small leaks.
- A meter key, if your meter box needs one.
- The number for the City of Fullerton water utility and for SoCalGas.
- A note of any valve that needs a plumber's attention.
Common questions
What if a valve will not turn?
Do not force it. Mark it on the map and ask a licensed plumber about replacing it.
Should I shut the main off when we travel?
Some households do. Turn it off and on gently, and think about the water heater and irrigation before you do.
Where should I keep the map?
Somewhere obvious and dry, such as inside the kitchen sink cabinet door or next to the electrical panel.
