If the bowl is about to overflow
- Close the stop valve.Turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise. If you cannot reach it, lift the tank lid and push the flapper down to stop more water entering the bowl.
- Do not flush again.A second flush adds another tank of water to a bowl that cannot drain.
- Protect the floor.Lay towels down and keep children and pets away from any spill.
- Wait a few minutes.Sometimes the water level slowly drops on its own, which makes plunging cleaner.
Clearing a simple clog
A flange plunger, the kind with a soft extension at the bottom, seals better in a toilet than a flat cup plunger. Push gently at first to remove air, then use firm in-and-out strokes while keeping the seal. Many clogs from too much paper clear this way.
Avoid pouring chemical drain cleaners into a toilet. They rarely clear a solid blockage, they can sit in the bowl, and they create a hazard for anyone who has to work on the toilet afterward. If you do call a plumber, tell them if anything has been poured in.
Toilet clog or main line problem?
Where the water goes tells you a lot.
- IfOnly this toilet is slow and everything else drains normallyThenThe clog is probably in the toilet or its short drain. Plunge, or have a plumber auger it.
- IfThe tub or shower gurgles or backs up when the toilet is flushedThenThe blockage is likely in the shared main line. Stop using water and call a plumber.
- IfWater rises in a floor drain or the lowest fixtureThenTreat it as a main line backup and keep people away from the water.
- IfAn object such as a toy went downThenDo not plunge hard. A plumber may need to pull the toilet to retrieve it.
Ways a plumber may clear it
| Method | Used when | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Toilet auger | Clog sits in the toilet trap | Reaches through the bowl without removing the toilet. |
| Pulling the toilet | Object stuck or auger cannot pass | Requires a new wax seal when reset. |
| Cleanout access | Blockage is past the toilet | Uses an outside or floor cleanout to reach the main line. |
| Camera inspection | Repeat clogs or suspected roots | Shows the condition of the line before choosing a repair. |
Habits that prevent repeat clogs
- Flush only toilet paper and waste; wipes labeled flushable can still cause trouble.
- Keep a flange plunger next to each toilet.
- Know where every toilet's stop valve is and make sure it turns.
- Watch for slow flushes that come back again and again, which can signal a line problem.
Common questions
Why does my toilet clog every few weeks?
Repeated clogs can come from a low-flow toilet design, buildup in the drain, or a partial blockage in the main line, such as roots. A camera inspection can show which.
Is a single clogged toilet urgent?
If it is the only toilet in the house, try to have it cleared the same day. Close the stop valve so it cannot overflow while you wait.
What affects the cost of clearing a clog?
Where the clog is, whether the toilet has to come off the floor, and whether the main line needs clearing or inspection.
