For bigger jobs such as a repipe, a sewer lateral repair or a slab leak reroute, getting more than one written estimate is common sense. The trouble is that estimates are written differently. One may include drywall patching and permits; another may leave both out.

Fill in a column for each contractor using only what is written in their estimate. If something is missing, write "not stated" and ask about it.

How to use it

  1. Describe the same problem to each.Share your symptom log and any camera footage so each contractor works from the same facts.
  2. Fill in only what is written.Do not rely on verbal promises when comparing.
  3. Mark the gaps.Circle any row marked not stated and ask that contractor to clarify in writing.
  4. Compare like with like.A lower total may leave out patching, permits or part of the scope.

When the estimates disagree

  • IfOne says repair, another says replaceThenAsk each what they saw. Camera footage or pressure test results help settle it.
  • IfMaterials differThenAsk why each was chosen and how it suits your house.
  • IfOnly one includes a permitThenCheck with the City of Fullerton whether the work needs one.
  • IfTimelines differ widelyThenAsk what drives each schedule and how long water will be off.

Common questions

How many estimates should I get?

Two or three is common for large jobs. For a small repair, one clear written estimate is often enough.

Can I share one contractor's estimate with another?

You can describe the scope you were offered, but it is usually better to let each one assess the problem independently.

What if an estimate is not itemized?

Ask for the scope, materials and inclusions in writing so you can compare.
