What to ask, and why

How do I check a plumber's license?

Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The record shows whether the license is active, what work it covers, and its bond and workers' comp details.

Should I pay up front for an emergency call?

Ask what any upfront charge covers and get it in writing. Be wary of anyone who wants a big payment before they've found the problem.

What if the plumber says the whole line has to go?

Ask what failed and ask to see it. Then ask whether a temporary repair can hold while you get a second estimate in daylight. Repiping and sewer replacement can almost always wait a few days.

Will my insurance cover the damage?

Your policy decides that. Photograph the damage and the failed part, keep every receipt, and call your insurer before anyone tears out drywall if you can.

Who fixes a leak at the meter or in the street?

The utility side of the meter generally belongs to the water provider. Check with the City of Garden Grove's water utility to confirm where your side starts.

Can I clean up sewage myself?

A small spill on tile or concrete, yes, with gloves, boots and disinfectant once the backup has stopped. Soaked carpet, drywall or a large overflow belongs to a cleanup crew.
