Quick checks by heater type
- IfGas tank heater and the pilot is outThenFollow the relighting instructions on the heater's label. If it will not stay lit, the thermocouple or gas control may need service.
- IfElectric tank heater with no hot waterThenCheck the breaker. If it trips again after resetting, stop and call a plumber or electrician.
- IfTankless unit shows an error codeThenNote the code and check the manual. Hard water scale is a frequent cause of tankless faults.
- IfWater is warm but runs out fastThenSediment buildup or a failing element or dip tube is likely. Schedule service.
- IfNo hot water and water around the baseThenThe tank may have failed. Shut off the cold supply and energy source.
Hard water and heater life
Garden Grove's water carries a lot of dissolved minerals. In a tank heater, those minerals settle to the bottom and form a layer that the burner or element has to heat through. You may hear popping or rumbling, and the heater works harder for less hot water.
Tankless heaters suffer differently: scale builds on the heat exchanger, flow sensors trip and the unit throws error codes or shuts down. Regular flushing or descaling, done on the schedule the manufacturer recommends, is the main defense in either case.
Before the plumber arrives
Write down the details
Brand, model and age from the label, the fuel type and any error code.
Check the area
Note any water, rust, scorch marks or unusual smells near the heater.
Clear access
Move stored items so the heater, vent and gas valve are easy to reach.
Leave it off if in doubt
If you are unsure whether it is safe, leave the gas or power off until it is checked.
Repair or replace?
Repair often makes sense
- Heater is relatively young
- Problem is a part: thermocouple, element, valve, igniter
- No leak from the tank body
Replacement often makes sense
- Tank is leaking or badly rusted
- Repeated failures in a short time
- Heater lacks required seismic strapping or venting is unsafe
Ask the plumber
- What part failed and why?
- Is the heater close to the end of its service life?
- Is it strapped and vented to current requirements?
- Would a flush or descale help prevent this again?
- What is your CSLB license number?
Common questions
Is no hot water an emergency?
Usually not, unless there is a leak, a gas smell or a tripping breaker. It is uncomfortable but can often wait for regular hours.
How often should I flush a tank heater?
Follow the manufacturer's guidance. In hard water areas, many plumbers suggest doing it more often than in soft water areas.
Can I relight the pilot myself?
If there is no gas smell, many heaters can be relit by following the label instructions. If you are uncomfortable or it will not stay lit, call for service.
