The first fifteen minutes

Do these in order. Nothing else matters until the water stops.

  1. Close the main shutoff

Turn the house valve clockwise until it stops. If it will not move or does not stop the flow, close the valve in the meter box at the curb with a meter key or adjustable wrench.

  2. Open a low faucet

An outdoor hose bib or bathtub tap drains the pressure left in the lines, so less water escapes from the break.

  3. Shut down the water heater

Set a gas unit's control to pilot or off, or switch off the breaker for an electric unit, so it does not heat an emptying tank.

  4. Move what you can

Lift rugs, electronics, paperwork and furniture out of the wet area and set wood furniture legs on foil or plastic.

Why pipes burst in Garden Grove homes

Freezing is rarely the cause here. In Garden Grove, a burst usually traces back to age and water chemistry. Many houses built in the 1950s through the 1970s still carry their original copper or galvanized supply lines, and decades of hard water and pressure changes thin the pipe walls until a weak spot gives way.

Failed connectors are the other common culprit. Braided supply hoses to toilets, faucets and washing machines, plastic fittings and old angle stops can split without warning, and they often fail when no one is home. A break inside a wall or ceiling may show up first as a stain, a bulge in drywall or the sound of running water.

Document before you clean up

Insurers usually want to see the source and the extent of the damage.

  • Photos and video of the broken pipe or fitting before anyone removes it
  • Wide shots of every wet room, plus close-ups of floors, baseboards and ceilings
  • The time you found the leak and when you shut the water off
  • A note of damaged items with approximate age
  • Any old part the plumber removes, kept in a bag
  • Receipts for fans, towels, tarps or emergency services

Repair options a plumber may offer

What drives the cost

We do not quote prices on this site. The bill usually depends on whether the call is after hours, how hard the break is to reach, how much wall or ceiling must be opened, the pipe material and whether nearby pipe should be replaced too. Drywall, flooring and drying are typically separate trades. Ask for each part in writing before work starts.

What to ask the plumber

  1. What is your CSLB license number? (Check it at cslb.ca.gov.)
  2. Is this a temporary repair or a permanent one?
  3. Is the rest of this pipe in similar condition?
  4. Will this work need a permit from the city?
  5. Can I keep the failed section for my insurance claim?

Common questions

How do I shut off water if the house valve is stuck?

Use the valve inside the water meter box near the curb. It usually takes a meter key or a wrench turned a quarter turn. If you cannot close it, call the City of Garden Grove's water utility.

Can I turn the water back on after closing it?

Only once the broken section is capped or repaired. A plumber can often isolate the damaged line so the rest of the house has water while repairs are planned.

Should I use a fan to dry things out?

Fans help on hard surfaces, but soaked drywall, insulation and carpet pad often need professional drying to prevent mold. Do not run electrical equipment while standing in water.
