Stop the overflow

  1. Close the supply valve

Turn the oval handle on the wall or floor behind the toilet clockwise. The tank stops refilling.

  2. Lift the flapper if needed

If the valve is stuck, take the tank lid off and push the flapper down, then lift the float to stop the fill valve.

  3. Do not flush again

Each flush adds water to a bowl that cannot drain.

  4. Close the main if water keeps coming

If the supply valve will not close or the water is spreading, shut the main.

Simple clog or something bigger?

  • IfOnly this toilet is affected and other drains run fineThenLikely a clog in the toilet or its trap. A flange plunger often clears it.
  • IfWater rises in the tub or shower when the toilet is flushedThenThe main line is blocked. Stop using water and get the line cleared.
  • IfMore than one toilet backs upThenMain line or lateral problem. Treat it as urgent.
  • IfThe toilet runs constantly but does not overflowThenA worn flapper or fill valve. It wastes water but can wait for regular hours.

Why it happens

Wipes labeled flushable, paper towels, cotton swabs and too much paper at once are the most common causes of a single-toilet clog. In older Garden Grove homes, toilets may also connect to cast-iron drain lines that have narrowed with scale, so a modest amount of paper can stop them.

When the clog is past the toilet, in the main drain or the sewer lateral, plunging does little and can push water out of the lowest drain in the house instead.

Clean up safely

  • Wear gloves and keep children and pets out of the bathroom
  • Remove standing water with towels or a wet vacuum rated for liquids
  • Disinfect the floor, base of the toilet and nearby walls
  • Check the ceiling below if there is a room underneath
  • Bag and discard soaked bath mats you cannot wash hot

Common questions

Is an overflowing toilet an emergency?

If you can stop it at the valve and other toilets work, it can often wait. If it is the only toilet or sewage is coming up elsewhere, get help soon.

Should I use a chemical drain opener in a toilet?

No. They rarely clear toilet clogs and can damage the bowl seals and older pipe.

Why does my supply valve leak when I close it?

Old angle stops wear out, especially with hard water. Replacing it is a simple job.
