Where is the water likely coming from?
- IfDrips only when an upstairs shower, tub or toilet is usedThenA drain, overflow or seal leak in that fixture. Stop using it until it is checked.
- IfDrips constantly, even with nothing runningThenA pressurized supply line. Close the main shutoff now.
- IfAppears only during or after rainThenLikely a roof or flashing problem rather than plumbing.
- IfUnder an attic with a water heater or furnaceThenCheck the heater's drain pan and relief valve line, or a condensate line.
Contain it
Stop the source
Close the fixture's shutoff or the main, depending on what you found above.
Relieve the bulge carefully
If a bulge keeps growing, standing to the side with a bucket underneath, a small hole at its lowest point lets water drain in a controlled way. Only do this if you can reach it safely and power to nearby fixtures is off.
Protect below
Move furniture and electronics, lay plastic and keep a bucket under the drip.

Single-story homes are not immune
Most Garden Grove tract homes are single story, so many people assume a ceiling leak must be the roof. But some homes have supply lines rerouted through the attic, often after an earlier slab leak, and some have water heaters or furnaces with condensate lines up there. An attic leak leaves the same brown ring on the ceiling as an upstairs bathroom leak.
In two-story homes and condominiums, a stain below a bathroom usually points to a shower pan, tub overflow, wax ring or supply line. In multi-unit buildings, the leak may start in a neighbor's unit, so notify building management as well.
What usually follows the plumbing repair
- Opening enough ceiling to dry the cavity fully
- Checking insulation in the attic and replacing it if soaked
- Testing for moisture before patching, so mold is not sealed in
- Drywall repair, texture matching and paint by the appropriate trade
- Keeping records of each step for an insurance claim
Ask the plumber
- Was the leak from a supply line, drain or fixture seal?
- Are other lines in the attic or ceiling of similar age or material?
- How much ceiling needs to stay open to dry?
- What is your CSLB license number?
Common questions
Can I paint over a water stain once it dries?
Only after the source is fixed and the area is confirmed dry. Use a stain-blocking primer first, or the mark can bleed through.
How do I know if it is the roof or a pipe?
Timing is the best clue: rain-only leaks point to the roof, constant leaks to a supply line, and use-linked leaks to a drain or fixture.
Should I call my insurer before repairs?
Stop the water first, then contact your insurer early so you know what documentation they need.
