  2. Walk the outside

Look along the foundation for a capped pipe near the ground, often facing the street.

Purchase documents or permits may show the year built and remodel dates.

  4. Ask at the next visit

Have the plumber fill in anything you could not identify.

Why material matters

Many Fullerton homes from the 1950s through the 1970s sit on slabs with original cast-iron or galvanized drain lines, and their sewer laterals may be cast iron or clay. Knowing that before a plumber arrives helps them choose a cable head, decide whether jetting is appropriate and plan for corroded fittings.

Common questions

How can I tell plastic from metal pipe?

Plastic drain pipe is usually white or black and light. Metal is heavier, may show rust or threads, and sounds solid when tapped.

What if I cannot find a cleanout?

Some older homes lack an accessible one. Note that on the worksheet; a plumber can advise.

Should I update the worksheet after a repair?

Yes. Write down what was replaced, with the date and the contractor's license number.
