What a slow drain is telling you

Water leaves a healthy kitchen sink in a steady swirl. When it lingers, pools around the strainer or drops in fits and starts, something is narrowing the path. In most kitchens that something is grease and food building on the pipe wall, but a few other causes look similar.

A drain that empties slowly and then makes a loud glug can also be short of air. Every drain needs a vent pipe that lets air in behind the water. If the vent is blocked or the fixture was never vented properly, the water drains in gulps and may pull water out of the trap.

How it usually progresses

Not every drain follows this path, but many kitchen lines do.

Early
Sink empties a few seconds slower than it used to, mostly noticed after washing pans.
Weeks later
Water pools while the faucet runs; a faint gurgle after it drains.
Later still
Dishwasher water appears in the basin; the disposal side fills when it runs.
The stop
A big load of grease or food bridges the gap and the sink holds water.

Worth trying before you call

  • Clean the basket strainers and look down the tailpiece with a flashlight.
  • Run the disposal briefly with cold water to clear the chamber.
  • Plunge with the other basin sealed if the sink still drains a little.
  • Open and rinse the P-trap over a bucket if the fittings are in good shape.
  • Skip the chemical openers and keep grease out from here on.

Ask the plumber

  1. Do you think this is grease buildup, a vent issue or the pipe itself?
  2. Will a cable be enough, or would jetting last longer in this line?
  3. If it slows again, at what point would a camera inspection make sense?

Common questions

Will baking soda and vinegar fix a slow drain?

The fizz can lift a little loose residue near the sink, but it will not remove grease built up feet down the line. It is harmless to try; just do not expect it to open a stopped drain.

Can a vent problem make only the kitchen sink slow?

Yes. Kitchens are sometimes vented separately from the rest of the house, so a blocked or missing vent can affect the sink alone.

How long can I live with a slow drain?

It varies, but it rarely improves on its own. Calling while it still drains is usually easier than waiting for it to stop.
